History
The Club started to become established in 1980, formalised as the Capalaba Australian Rules Football Club in 1981 and first located on the site of the driving range on Mt Gravatt-Capalaba Road. Lighting for the training purposes consisted of a ring of car lights. The club moved to Alexandra Park,, Alexandra Hills, in 1982 and changed its name to Capalaba Australian Football and Recreation Club by its founding president the late Ferris Abell. The club had a canteen and change rooms, and its first lighting consisted of only three light poles.
The club became incorperated in 1989 and a year later a clubhouse was built with the club becoming known as Alexandra Hills Australian Football and Recreation Club Inc. to reflect the surrounding area it had now moved to. In 1998 the full field floodlighting was constructed to allow night-time football. The following year the club changed its name to Alexandra Hills Sporing Club, and in June 2000 the newly renovated clubhouse was opened after 18 months of redevelopment, courtesy of many years of campaigning by Redland Shire Councillor Murray Elliot.
Funding for the clubhouse redevelopment was through a $ 150,000 grant and a $ 100,000 interest-free loan from Redland Shire Council. The club, including its hard working mostly voluntary workers, wouldn’t be where it is today without the support from Council, and its dedication to development of sporting codes throughout the shire, in particular junior sporting clubs.
In 2005 the park was named Keith Surridge Park after life member and long time club volunteer Keith (Bulldog) Surridge. Many volunteers have had an immense sense of pride in seeing the growth of this club and its membership, from the grass roots level, established by the Abell family, to a fully licensed function centre with catering available.
Our Club colours are red and royal blue originally resembling exactly that of a well respected Port Melbourne Football Club. However, our jersey style has changed with the times from the traditional stripes to a jet bomber – predominantly located on the front of the jersey.
Vision
We are a family orientated Club with a strong Committee, fully Accredited Coaches and great parent support which has resulted in many successes over the years. Our Club mission is to promote the sport of Australian Rules Football – AFL – by striving to put the players’ interests first. Whether a newcomer to the Club or an experienced player, each person enjoys an equal status within the Club and is given a “fair go”. This Club prides itself on the development of our players, both on and off the field.
